Alexandrea Ravenelle, an assistant professor in sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, told BI she would like to see gig workers classified as employees of the platforms, not independent workers. Ravenelle said a better plan would be for companies to extend similar types of retirement benefits to gig workers as employees of those companies enjoy. The Robinhood program also offers gig workers on these platforms access to free financial counseling through GreenPath Financial Wellness, a nonprofit. Starbucks customers in Philadelphia can get the chain's coffee delivered in the middle of the night. Delivery makes up just 2% of Starbucks' orders, though customers generally spend more per transaction. Around three dozen employees were trained to prepare Starbucks orders at the two sites, it reported. Some of the Starbucks drinks available on Gopuff at around 4:30 a.m. Delivery, which Narasimhan said on Tuesday makes up just 2% of its orders, is an area of focus for Starbucks.

Getir, one of the biggest remaining grocery apps, has raised $500 million, per sources. But its valuation has been almost halved to around $6.5 billion, from $11.8 billion. Other existing shareholders added another $150 million to $200 million to the round, two further sources said. The deal is a 45% markdown on the $11.8 billion price tag that was placed on Getir during its last fundraise in March 2022. Getir could have been valued even lower but the deal came with a high liquidation preference, the sources added.

Consultancy Brick Meets Click forecasted in January that grocery e-commerce sales will grow at a rate of 12% through 2027. That's a tremendous slowdown from early in the pandemic when e-commerce grocery jumped an average of 300% each month. Other startups in the grocery delivery space have faced issues.
